Functional Capacity Screening

A pre-employment Functional Capacity Screening is a series of tests that provide objective information about an applicant’s functional capacity in relation to the job for which they are applying. It forms part of the organisational recruitment process and should be implemented before an offer of employment is made.

The assessment meets the needs of the applicant by providing a safe and objective measurement of their current physical capacity. It also meets the needs of the employer by identifying the match between the potential employee and their proposed tasks in a non-discriminatory way.

The testing is performed by a Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist and consists of a traditional range of movement, muscle length and strength assessment combined with a functional assessment utilising the Blankenship FCE system or Workhab System.

The assessment criteria will be specific to the required demands of the job eg kitchen, nurse, maintenance for which they are applying and may include any of the following:

• Material handling – lifting/ lowering/pushing/pulling capacity in terms of weight, range, frequency and body postures
• Functional flexibility – reaching, stooping, squatting, kneeling and twisting
• Frequency rating – extrapolates the impact of repetitive work in bending, overhead reach, squatting, climbing and balance during an 8 hour shift
• Sustained position tolerance – sustained work in reaching, stooping, crouching, kneeling
• Ability to implement appropriate body mechanics during material handling activities
• Sitting, standing and walking tolerance
• Aerobic fitness
• Upper limb assessment

The applicant will be required to attend our offices for a period of approximately 1 hour duration and results will be available within 24 hours.

Medical Assessment

To compliment the physical or functional assessment, we can also coordinate a Medical assessment which is performed by a GP. Depending on your/the job requirements, they can perform the following:

• Medical Examination
• Audiometry (hearing)
• Spirometry (lungs)
• Drug Screen – Australian Standard
• Drug Screen – Laboratory Confirmation
• ECG
• Blood Lead Level (with Medical Examination only)
• Chest X Ray
• Spine X Ray
• Trucksafe

A report is produced of their findings, generally within 24 hours of the assessment.
